Air pollution causes more than 2.7 million deaths in the world every year. More air pollution is caused by the burning of fuels like coal, gas and oil. Each year tens of thousands of people die in the world’s major cities as a result of breathing polluted air. Air pollution causes other diseases and may make it easier for children to get sick in the future.
More than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean and safe water. Without safe and clean drinking water there would be more patients in the hospitals. The people in developed countries are using 85 percent of the world’s water.
Over 2.4 billion people have no access to good sanitation. Every day, as many as half of all the people on the earth suffer from one of the many diseases caused by poor sanitation. Without proper sanitation, efforts to improve health care are useless.
The problem is that good soil is gradually lost. When trees are cut down, there is nothing to hold the soil in place on the hillside. So when it rains, the soil is washed down the hills and into the rivers. Strong winds can also blow away the valuable soil that lies on the top of the fields.
soil be blown away trees be cut down soil be washed into… nothing to hold…
desertification The area of desert is growing.
Dunhuang Gebi A great city (China) A desert Why?
too many sheep and cattle all the grass be eaten grass never grow again ; the land become desert
The area of desert in the world is growing every year. Many parts of the world, which once had large populations and produced plenty of crops, have become deserts. Dunhuang in China, deep in the heart of the Gebi Dewert, was once a great city.
Cattle are one cause of the problem. In good years, farmers increase the numbers of their cattle. Then one year, the rains fail to come. The farmers do not want to kill any of their cattle, so the cattle eat all the grass and anything that grows on poorer land. If this continues for several years, the grass never grows again and the land becomes a desert. One suggested answer is for farmers to limit the numbers of their cattle.
Half the world - almost 3 billion people - live on less than 2 dollars a day. 1.3 billion people live on less than 1 dollar a day. In the year 2000, some 1.7 million children died as a result of poverty. Almost 800 million people in the world do not have enough to eat.
Tomorrow for the earth and for all of us will be wonderful!

The possible answers A: Now, we’re having a meeting to decide whether we should burn coal. Please tell us your opinions. B: I think we should burn the coal to earn money. We can pay taxes to the government. How can our country develop quickly without money?
C: But burning coal causes too much pollution to our environment. It pollutes the air badly. Air pollution can affect our health in many ways. Can money buy health? If nothing is done to stop pollution, we will have no fresh air to breathe and no good environment to live.
D: Quite right. I don’t think we should burn the coal. We should spend more money on science to find a better way of using the coal. After having found out the way to burn it without pollution, not only can we burn the coal, but also we can protect our environment.
