Theirmeeting alsohonoredthefounding of the“RoyalPresidio Chapel”, whichtodayisknownasSan CarlosCathedral.Aftertheceremoniesthatday,everyonesatdownfora picnicundera largeoaktreenear theirship,theSanAntonio,whichrested intheharbor. ThefirstmodernMeriendawascelebrated in1929,twoyears beforetheformationof theMontereyHistoryand Art Association.AceremonyatColtonHall and asmall luncheonattheMemoryGardenmarkedtheoccasion.It waspresided overbyCarmel Martinand HarryGreene.Thenext year,350peoplejoined Carmel Martin,whoagainactedasMasterofCeremonies,in theMemoryGardenand onceagaincelebrated Monterey’s birthday.TheMonterey Historyand ArtAssociationhascelebrated thisimportant earlyCaliforniahistoriceventeveryyearsincetheAssociationwasestablishedin1931(exceptoneyear duringWorld WarII). LaMeriendacanbedescribedasa“partywithina party”withuniquely decoratedhosted tables. LaFavorita/Doncellas/LaDuena EachyearsinceLaMeriendawasfounded,a localyoung woman withhistoricconnectionstoMontereyischosenasLaFavorita,andwithherlovelycourt,reignsoverthisuniquecelebrationofMonterey’shistory.Twootheryoungwomenareselected toserveasherattendants (“Doncellas”).The womenwhoarechosenfortheseroles,accompanied byachaperone(“LaDuena”) cantracetheirancestrybackthroughMontereyhistorymanygenerations.Theseattractiveyoungwomendressintraditional whiteSpanishgownsand mantillas (scarfs) and greetguests,cutthebirthday cake,and hold courtatthecelebration.The2014LaMeriendaCourt included KaitlynWilliams- LaFavorita;LaurenAllen- Doncella;Rosemary"Rose"Russo- Doncellaand Edith(Edie) Adams McDonald- Duena.The CakeBearerswillbeNicholasWilliams,BrotherofKaitlynWilliams,and
