TheMandell GisnetCenterforConflictManagementAwarded GranttoSupportVeteransMediation TheMandellGisnetCenter (MGC)has announcedthatitrecently received a grant from theNationalAssociation for Community Mediation (NAFCM) Seaside,CA,December06, 2014-TheMandell GisnetCenter (MGC)hasannounced thatitrecentlyreceived a grantfrom theNational Associationfor CommunityMediation(NAFCM) and theJAMSFoundation tosupport VeteransMediationinMontereyCountyandthesurrounding tri-CountyareatoreachveteransacrossSanBenito,MontereyandSantaCruz Counties. “Overthepast30years,mediationprogramsand serviceshaveproventoofferconstructiveandeffectiveapproachestoresolvedifferencesand conflictsbetweenindividuals,groupsandorganizations,including veterans,”explainsIsabel Bjork,ExecutiveDirectorandAssociateDean,Mandell GisnetCenter.“Wearehonored tobeoneofonlysixorganizationsnationally toberecognized witha grantfromTheJAMSFoundationand theNational Associationfor CommunityMediation (NAFCM) tosupportVeteransMediation.Webelievethereisastrong need inour communityand lookforward tohelping veteranswithsomeimportant challengestheyfacein theirlives.” TheVeteransMediation programwasfounded withtherecognition that veteranshavedistinctvaluesandexperiences thatshapetheir lives.TheMGCstaffworkswithveteransandtheirfamilies toresolveconflictsabout housing,familylife,benefitsandworkthroughmediation ina safeenvironment.   2. coursesatPepperdineLawSchool and CommunityBoards. • AboutThe MandellGisnetCenterfor ConflictManagement: • TheMandell GisnetCenterfor Conflict Management (MGC),thenon-profit alternativedisputeresolutioneducationandservicearmoftheMontereyCollegeofLaw,a501(c)(3)non-profit,is • committed toproviding mediationand trainingservices. • TheMandell GisnetCenter,housedinremodeled LEED PlatinumFord Ord buildingsinMontereyCounty,California,wasfounded withthevisionthatconflictscanberesolved ina peaceful, amicablemannerandwithout expensive,protracted,and damaging legal battles.In2005,MauriceMandell and Rebekah Gisnetleft a bequest totheMontereyCollegeofLawasaresult oftheirpersonal challengesrelated tothelegal system. Theirbequest wasused toformMGC.Though theylived ina beautifulareaand hadsignificant resourcesattheirdisposal,MauriceandRebekah spent thelastyearsof theirlivesinvolved ina bitterlegal battleovera property disputewiththeirneighbors.Theyspent manyyearsfighting incourt,butneitherpartyeverfound a satisfactoryresolution.Attheend of their lives,as theylooked backonthewasted time,energy, and moneyspent onthatdispute,theyconcluded thattherehadtobea betterway. Theyresolvedthata largeportionof theirestate would begivenasa bequest forthecreationand promotionofmediationand trainingservices throughMontereyCollegeofLaw.MGChasfulfilled thisvision by offeringavarietyofADReducationand services,including mediation.
