IF THE SHOE FITS. PALIMPSESTS AND PASTICHES OF DIASPORA Palimpsest: Faint remains of lost texts. Pastiche: Incongruous combinations from different dimensions.
THE SHOE: AN INVITATION TO WALK INTO THE PICTURE. The shoe as a segue into new forms of knowledges including my own story. BUT the shoe opens these doors only if history and politics, are the frame

PASTICHE ENTERS THE FRAME OF THE PALIMPSEST Duval inspired Baudelaire to write a poem, which inspired Manet to produce his famous painting.
PASTICHE ENTERS THE FRAME OF THE PALIMPSEST August Sander, Circus People, 1930. Sulter produces her own counter-image:
STORIES – MAUD SULTER’S, ESI EDUGYAN’S AND MINE. Sulter’s poetic-story -“Blood Money” - the life of a Cameroonian young girl called Monique - “There’s no way I can make this poem rhyme”. Esi Edugyan’s Half Blood Blues - Hitler’s thugs lump together blacks and Jews as in “‘Jewkikes!’” and “‘Niggerkikes!’” Maud Sulter: the presence of Africa in Europe Me: The presence of Europe in Africa
IF THE SHOE FITS, WEAR IT. The “punctum” sabotages our expectations and creates the artistry of the entire work (Roland Barthes).
I entered through the intricately carved door of Maud Sulter’s studio
The studio door swung itself off its hinges and on its magic wings we flew to the digital site
Kwesi was liberated from where he had lain, petrified in rock
I looked again at Maud Sulter’s artwork in all its holistic magnificence& saw the miracle of her big shoeprint on the mountain – Cape Town’s Table Mountain perhaps?
