The Digestive System • What is the digestive system? • A complex group of organs and glands that process the food we eat http://www.caribexams.org/files/files/digestive_system.gif
What does it do? It mechanically and chemically breakdowns food into smaller molecules which can be absorbed into the blood stream Excretes waste materials your body can’t use
Four Stages of Digestion Ingestion Digestion Absorption Elimination

Digestion Mechanical: • Begins in the mouth with the teeth and tongue chewing food into pieces you can swallow Chemical: • Salivary glands produce enzymes (amylase), which breaks down complex carbohydrates to simple ones
Path of Digestion Mouth Teeth, tongue Salivary glands – Excrete enzymes Swallow Pharynx – epiglottis covers trachea when you swallow Esophagus Peristalsis Stomach –churns the food and mixes with gastric juice to form chyme Small intestine –duodenum – breaks down fat with bile from liver – enzymes from pancreas break down chyme Pancreas Liver
Absorption Small intestine: • occurs in the last five meters of called the jejunum and ileum • villi increase the rate of absorption of nutrients Large intestine: • Accepts what the small intestine doesn’t absorb • Absorbs more water and concentrates the wastes
