A force for both unity & division • Similar nations living under different govs can come together to form one state (Germany, Italy) • Culturally distinct nations can develop feelings of shared nationalism and come together as a Nation-state (U.S.A.) • Nations with little shared culture forced to live in one state can splinter to form independent nation-states (Yugoslavia, U.S.S.R.)
How can new states encourage Nationalism among their Citizens?
Establishing fair political processes and laws that benefit everyone
