A goodpress release? • The competition is hard: the world is full of news • Youhave 10 seconds to make an impression • the journalist is interested in the topicshe/shecanunderstand • ideallenght: max. one A4-page • The heading is short and interesting. • Begin with the most important result of your research. What is new? (the order of thingsalmostopposite to scientificwriting) • The language is good ”everydaylanguage”. The sentencesareshort, and there is no scientificvocabulary (ifpossible). Usecomparisons and examples Maatalous-metsätieteellinen tiedekunta / Viestintä
A goodpress release? • Also look at howyourresultscanbeapplied. • Writesomehingaboutyourmethods – keepitshort • Yourcontactdetails – important! • make sure you’reavailable • Sometimesalsosomethingaboutyourself (for example the year of matriculationexamination, birthplace etc.). • links to webpagesarebetterthanattachedfiles Maatalous-metsätieteellinen tiedekunta / Viestintä
How to communicatewith the media • Great! A journalistwants to interviewyou! • Keepyourcellphone on! • Yourepresent The University of Helsinki and yourfield of science. • Cooperate: the journalist is a professional, just likeyou. You have the right to ask for the possible factual errors to be corrected. • Beprepared for interviews, taketime to concentrate for a minute, ortwo… • Youcanalsosuggest the place to shoot for film of photo. Nobodycalled – whatwentwrong? • Notnecessarilyanything. • The editors and news desksgethundreds of pressreleaseseveryday (busiestday is Thursday) • ...whichmeansthatabout 1 % of themwilllead into something • Problem of UH: Helsingin Sanomat is not an easy ”localnewspaper” to get into • science journalists + specialbranchesareimportant • What is news? Depends on the day • Yourtopiccanbemostimportant and relevant, butstillnothinghappens • Don’tbediscouraged: sometimes the contacthappens a lotlater Maatalous-metsätieteellinen tiedekunta / Viestintä
The ElevatorPitch-exercise • Youare in an elevatorwithsomeoneimportant: a potentialemployer, someonewhocould finance yourfurtherresearch etc. The elevatorridetakes 30 seconds... • whatwouldyoutellaboutyourwork? • whatare the mostimportantpoints? • what is new, what is special? • also a goodexercise for jobinterviews Maatalous-metsätieteellinen tiedekunta / Viestintä
