This question is always in the same format. • There will be a statement and you will have to prove which sources support it and which do not. • There are 2 additional marks available if you can explain the reliability of some of the sources.
Some example statements ….. • ‘Medieval attempts to stop the plague were useless’ • ‘Fleming's importance has been exaggerated.’ • ‘Jenner’s work was an immediate success’ • ‘Monasteries made an important contribution to caring for the sick in the Middle Ages’
Go through each source and say directly if it supports or opposes. • You need to PEE – it has to be detail from the source! • You must do this for all sources.
The results carried out at Glasgow Infirmary. The figures come from Joseph Lister’s personal records. From 1867 carbolic acid was used as an antiseptic at the Infirmary
‘People in the Middle Ages knew nothing about good public health.’ Use source to support. • Source A supports this statement because it shows a water selling who is likely to the providing dirty water. This shows that access to clean water was difficult. However, source B does not agree with the statement as it shows that some places like monasteries had clean water and this would keep them healthy. I can trust this source as it is from the time and proves they were thinking about providing clean water. Source C supports the view because it is giving religious solutions for bad health, this would not work and shows they did not understand the cause of disease. I know the information is reliable as it agrees with my own knowledge/background information/another source. Source D also opposes the view that medieval people knew nothing about good public health. In this source they are cleaning the streets, this would help to prevent illness. It is a good source as it was issued by the king and therefore Use source to oppose Reliability! Use source to support. Reliability! Use source to oppose
