Measurement Units Review Metric System Measurements and Conversions
Metric System • The metric system is based on base units that correspond to a certain kind of measurement • Length = metre • Volume/Capacity = litre • Weight (Mass) = gram • Prefixes plus base units make up the metric system • Example: • Centi + metre = Centimetre • Kilo + litre = Kiloliter
Metric System • The three prefixes that we will use the most are: • kilo • centi • milli
Volume and Capacity Measurement • So if you needed to measure volume or capacity (the amount in a container) you would choose litreas your base unit • For example: • Amount of water in a swimming pool • 10 kilolitres • Amount of water in a bathtub • 25 litres • Amount of water in a drinking glass • 250 millilitres
Measuring and Comparing Capacity • Today, you will be conducting an experiment to compare capacities in two different sizes of cups • Your goal is to “Estimate, measure, and compare capacities, and determine relationships among units” • You will be working in assigned groups to complete the experiment, which is on page 312 in your Math text book • You will also have to record your results and complete some questions on your given handout
Measuring and Comparing Capacity • You will be working in the following groups: • 1 - Zihao, Erin, Nisa, Sami • 2 - Curtis, Angelina, Ali • 3 - Julia M, Kevin L., Bethany, Kevin H. • 4 - Nyah, Isabelle, Hamza, Andrew • 5 - Myah, Hahn, Julia S. • 6 - Matthew, Meiqi, Ashton, Hira • 7 - Lauren, Israel, Nicolas (with Mr. Woods)
Measuring and Comparing Capacity • Each group will be given 2 cups of different sizes, a beaker, a pitcher of water, and question sheets • When you are finished measuring the water that fits into each cup, please pour the water back into the pitchers so it can be re-used for other measurements (since we don’t have a sink out here!) • When your experiments and question sheets are completed, hand the sheets in to the “Math” bin under the window and pour the water from the jugs outside, then put the empty water jugs, cups, and beakers on the side shelf
