THE GOOD AND BAD OF MAKERERE UNIVERSITY BY Asasira BRENDA
INTRODUCTION Makerere University, Kampala(MAK) is Uganda's largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. In 1963, it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees from the University of London. It became an independent national university in 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and Makerere University. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.
LOCATION MAK LOCATION ON MAP Makerere University is located on Makerere Hill which is one of the many hills on which Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda, is built. The main Campus is about 5 km to the North of the City Centre covering an area of 300 acres. The location offers an excellent academic environment free from all forms of disturbances associated with city centre locations, as portrayed in the University Anthem.

BAD SIDE: CONSTANT STRIKES • Students, parents want 'permanent solution'... “Almost, every year, there is a strike at the university, which complicates students' programmes, especially those from far and outside Uganda,” .. • Read more: https://www.newvision.co.ug/tag/makerere-strikes/
BAD SIDE: CONSTANT STRIKES The strikes have led to closure of the university, deaths, arrests, vandalizationof property among others all which soil the image of the university.
BAD SIDE: sex for marks • Sex for marks is a vice that has persisted to silently eat up many high institutions of learning. The vector has its toll at Makerere University as many pot bellied professors and PHD holding doctors have failed to differentiate between their wives and the students. • VIDEO: NBS INVESTIGATES • URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtKEo7KPDBU
