  2. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction Describe and explain some of the rural changes which have taken place in a developed country you have studied. Great Plains, USA [A] Description of the change [B] Explanation of the change [Ex] Example of an area where the change has taken place

  3. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] There has been an increase in farm size. [B] This is because more people left the Great Plains and land was bought over by the remaining farmers to increase output. [Ex] Everywhere, North Dakota.

  4. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] Even more technology is now used such as precision farming (where satellites control irrigation) and laser levelling. [B] This is more efficient as it saves money and reduces water waste. Soil erosion is also reduced. [Ex] Texas.

  5. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] There has been improved farming methods for example contour ploughing and intercropping. [B] this has reduced soil erosion which is a big problem here. [Ex] The Dust Bowl of Oklahoma.

  6. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] More animals are now being kept [B] as frequent droughts make crop growing unreliable and with more animals, more grass is growing and soil erosion is reduced. [Ex] North Dakota.

  7. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] Different types of crops are now being grown, for example sunflowers. [B] This is because they are better suited to dry conditions. [Ex] Kansas.

  8. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] More money is now being given from the government, for example the Conservation Reserve Program. [B] This ensures a higher standard of living for farmers and ensures the country produces enough food.[Ex] Texas.

  9. National 5 Rural Urban Introduction [A] Diversification has taken place, so there is more accommodation for tourists. [B] This makes it more profitable as farmers make money elsewhere too. [Ex] Montana.
