  1. Higher Urban Urban Introduction Traffic Congestion [Date] Today I will: - Know the problems with traffic in Glasgow’s CBD and know how they have been tackled. What are some of the problems with traffic?

Higher Urban Urban Introduction As Glasgow grew rapidly into the main commercial and industrial centre of Scotland, and as car ownership and use of lorries for transporting goods increased dramatically from about the 1950s onwards, the city began to suffer more and more from the build up of traffic. Congestion, noise, air pollution, increased travel time and cost to business became major problems. The city, like most others, was in danger of grinding to a halt. The politicians and planners had to come up with solutions to ease traffic congestion. See page 17 of the Summary Notes

  6. Higher Urban Urban Introduction Bridges and tunnels such as Clyde Tunnel: Again to divert traffic Effectiveness: Very helpful at alleviating congestion

  7. Higher Urban Urban Introduction M8 and M74: This means that traffic ‘misses’ the CBD. Effectiveness: Very helpful, jams though on the Kingston Bridge.

  10. Higher Urban Urban Introduction Reduce Street Parking: high parking charges through use of parking meters, parking permits, traffic wardens; To reduce car traffic Effectiveness: Unpopular but effectively reduces traffic
