  40. Availability beats cognition even when… You know about the effects of environment on your decisions You don’t believe the environment is changing your decisions

  41. Your KNOWLEDGE of the impact of environment on your behavior and your BELIEF about the impact of environment on your behavior doesn’t CHANGE the impact of the environment on your behavior.

  42. So, what can we do? • Whether we admit it or not, more knowledge won’t change the impact of environment on our behaviors. • But, changing our environment can change our behaviors. We can focus more on choosing our environment!

  44. I would like to reduce the amount of sugar I eat, but I have problems with self-control because I really like sweets. For health reasons, I would like to increase the amount of raw vegetables, like carrots and celery, I eat. They don’t taste bad, but they aren’t that exciting, either. What practical suggestions can you think of to help each person by employing the principal of “availability beats cognition”? Work with one or more people around you and discuss. Have one person write down all of the different suggestions you can come up with and sign all of your names to the page.

  46. The availability heuristic • People assess the likelihood of risks by asking how readily examples come to mind • If people can readily think of relevant examples, they are far more likely to be frightened and concerned than if they cannot

  47. Mislead by the availability heuristic • Risk of terrorism seen as more important than the risks of sunbathing • People tend to think, wrongly, that more people die of homicides than suicides • Vivid and easily imagined causes of death (e.g., earthquakes, tornadoes) are wrongly thought more frequent than less vivid causes (e.g., asthma attacks), even though the latter are 20 times more numerous

  48. Consequences • The false estimation of probabilities weakens our ability to prepare for risks • Also, governments are more likely to allocate resources to risks that people consider important, even if they really are not • Unscrupulous politicians may vividly emphasize certain risks in order to get the electorate to have exaggerated views of certain risks • Business advertising may also take advantage of the availability bias in our belief formation
