  2. CDKN’s cities work • Why are cities important for climate compatible development? • City and sub-national planning innovations being piloted with Governments across the world – and learning from them.

  3. Case Study: Madurai – Future Proofing Cities • What should development in Madurai look like in 10,20,50 years, given the changing climate? By 2031, an extra 6-8 lakh residents. Where will they go? How will the services cope? Will climate change make the current water security and flooding worse?

  4. Climate proofing cities – Challenges (unique for cities) • Policy-making across different levels • Lack of authority and power in certain areas • Decision making under (even more) uncertainty, because of lack of climate data • Often isolated opportunities for experience sharing • (Even more) lack of capacity, resources and forward-thinking planning

  5. Climate proofing cities – Opportunities (unique for cities) • Departmental integration/coordination should be easier to achieve • Closer to the community • Local leaders on the front line of climate change • Ability to mobilise resources • Freedom to innovate and try new solutions

Integrating the Climate Perspective in Cities Drivers to Action: • Vulnerability assessments – participatory, trusted and communicated well • Local champions to facilitate political support • Bottom-up pressure/support from community groups • Partnerships for expertise/support • A crisis can create political will • Put forward the business case for action
