Why Changing Laws, Regulations and Social Attitudes Enhance Sports and Fitness Participation • Participation opened to females, people of all ages, people with physical disabilities since 1960s • Most significant is opening to females. --Title IX was the big game changer --Girls & women in traditional male sports • Old age no longer a time of frailty --Doctors advise older people to exercise --2006 study showed participation growing by people over 45 in 34 sports & fitness activities

Will Changing Laws, Regulations & Social Attitudes Continue to Enhance Sports & Fitness Participation? • Won’t revert to participation for able-bodied young men only --Much criticism of Title IX, by attempts to weaken it always fail --Women now a significant minority of participants in many sports & majority in some • Age even less of a barrier to participation • Even more open to people with disabilities • Participation by transgendered & people of ambiguous gender?

Why Health Concerns Enhance Sports & Fitness Participation • Unanimous medical advice for everyone to engage in physical activity • Science shows physical activity especially beneficial in preventing cardiovascular disease, substance abuse, mild mental/emotional disorders • Must participate in leisure sports & fitness for enough physical activity in modern society

Will Health Concerns Continue to Enhance Sports & Fitness Participation? • Probably won’t reverse prevailing medical opinion, but don’t need to buy expensive health club or gym memberships • 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity is recommended amount • Brisk walking is most consistently recommended & consistently most popular

Why Increasing Participation Opportunities Enhance Sports & Fitness Participation • Wide range of adult participation activities (e.g., Runs, walks, bike rides, golf tournaments, etc.) --Charities sponsor to raise money --Cities & regions sponsor to promote tourism • Exercise vacations are popular but expensive • 200,000 miles of recreational trails in the USA --Most significant are 9,000 miles of rail trails

WILL PROFESSIONAL SPORTS CONTINUE TO ENJOY PUBLIC GOODWILL? • THREAT POSED BY ATHLETES’ UNETHICAL, ILLEGAL, IMMORAL BEHAVIOR --DRUG & GUN VIOLATIONS, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SEXUAL ASSAULTS --STRONG EFFORTS OF LEAGUES & TEAMS TO POLICE THEMSELVES • BUILD GOODWILL WITH SUPPORT FOR CHARITY, ESPECIALLY PRO GOLF TOURS
