Program Description • Program began at Citrus Hills 12 years ago • Originally a 2 year pilot program • District wanted to see how students at Middle School would do in comparison to the Elementary School • Scores were at the top of the district in both Math & Language Arts • Became permanent after the two years due to the tremendous success. • Since that time, it has turned into and maintained an accelerated level with extremely high expectations for all students • Moved to El Cerrito – 8th year here
Program Description • Benefits • Good transition from elementary school to middle school • Students typically jump from one teacher to seven • In our program, students transition from one teacher, to three teachers, to seven • Taught each of the four core classes daily • Time in class to fully develop concepts • Block schedule allows enough time for an equivalent of two math classes and two language arts classes • Teachers are teaching to their strengths • Physical Education taught by P.E teachers
Program Description • Benefits • Seventh grade teachers from across the district can identify our students • Intermediate School expectations • Our students are involved in campus activities • NJHS & ASB • Band • Over the past five years, students have skipped seventh grade math and placed into Algebra • Take Geometry as 8th graders
Typical Day in 6th Grade • Students begin each day with one of the two core teachers • Class lasts for approximately 2 - 2½ hours • Teacher is able to teach both subjects with an emphasis on Language Arts and Math • Students switch classes or go to P.E. • Students go to lunch • Students return to the second teacher to finish the day
