Standards 1 & 4 • Judaism started when God spoke to Abraham. God told Abraham if he would believe in one god, he would be given the land in Canaan. Judaism started in Mesopotamia where Abraham lived. Abraham took his family to Canaan. When they were starving, they moved to Egypt. But there they were slaves, so they escaped with Moses leading them. This is called the Exodus. They went back to Canaan. Judaism is important because it was the first religion that believed in only one god.
Standard 2 • The sources of Jewish beliefs are the Torah, the Jewish Bible, the 10 Commandments, and observance of law. Observance of law means that they follow their laws and try not to break them.
Standard 3 • David (who fought the giant Goliath and defeated him) became their king. He started building a big temple, but he died before it was finished. His son, Solomon, ruled next, and he finished building the temple.
Standard 5 • Jewish people now live all over the world. They moved to other countries throughout their history. This movement is called the dispersion or the diaspora. They continue to practice their religion worldwide.
