Why take courses this way? • Work first hand with a teacher. • Especially helpful if you find a subject challenging. • Lessons focus on the important parts of a course • A schedule and motivation. • It can be a challenge to stay on track. This will help. • Courses are adapted and modified. • Focus is on making courses interesting and interactive. • Opportunity to work and interact with other students.

9. Registration & other important information. • Register through your home DE school. Contact your teacher advisor / counselor. Do this as early as possible. • Courses will start as early as possible in each semester. • Find out exact dates from your teacher advisor / counselor. • You should be contacted by your instructor very soon after you register. • You should receive your course materials and schedules early in the semester. If you don’t, please ask. • You will need accounts – email, LMS, DDMS, … If you have not received them, please ask. • (Note: not all courses will need all accounts and you will use the same accounts for several courses.)

10. What will your role be? • Participate in all activities. • Show up for and actively participate in the classes. • Follow the schedule set. • Learn to use the technology needed in the course. • Have a willingness to express your learning in a different ways – using technology to help. • Ask questions. • Don’t wait and presume that the information you need will come your way. Make the effort to find out. • All this will help you learn more effectively. • And will make this course and learning this way a better experience for you.

John Cabot • Cabot, although Italian by birth, sought Funding from England and so his explorations were made under the English flag. • King Henry VII of England gave him a grant to go on “full and free authority, leave, and power, to sail to all parts, countries, a see as, of the East, of the West, and of the North, under our banners and ensigns, with five ships ... and as many mariners or men as they will have in said ships, upon their own proper costs and charges, to seek out, discover, and find, whatsoever isles, countries, regions or provinces of the heathen and infidels, whatsoever they be, and in what part of the world soever they be, which before this time have been unknown to all Christians.”— Henry VII of England

23. The Dry Fishery Many English fishing ships used the dry fishing method. In this method the fish were caught, and brought on shore. Men built shelter for the spring and summer and lived on shore for many weeks. Fish were cleaned, and placed on racks in the air to dry. Salt was placed on them too. When the fish were dry the men placed them in barrels with more salt. This was called the "dry fishery" because the fish were dried before the men put them in barrels to bring back to Europe.

25. Technology – Computers and Stuff • An email account. • One will be provided. • This will be the main way your teacher will communicate with you. Check it daily. • Software needed will as a rule be provided. • Such as this whiteboard software. • Access to a reasonably new computer. • More up to date versions of such software as Java. • A reliable internet connection – the faster the better. • However, a dial-up connection can be used.
