  5. ABET Description of an Engineering Design Course:the process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs • Design Build and/or Design Analysis is emphasized. • It is a decision-making process (often iterative), in which the basic sciences and mathematics and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. • Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing, and evaluation. • It is essential to include a variety of realistic constraints, such as economic factors, safety, reliability, aesthetics, ethics, and environmental & social impacts. 6. Course Structure Advisor + Coordinator + Student Team Advisor Coordinator Feedback Reports Evaluates Reports Evaluates Student Team Graduation Project Courses

  7. Course Structure/ cont. • A team of 3-5 studentssupervised by advisor(s) • Weekly follow ups with the teams by College Coordinators on progress & communication skills • Course Schedule with Deadlines • Time Management Card. • Workshops on Project Management, Ethics, DesignProcessConcept,ProductDesignSpecifications, QualityAssurance, Safety, and CostEffectiveness • Final Report with guidelines Graduation Project Courses

  8. Advisor Responsibilities • Discuss proposed project(s) with students. • Require a project description and a Gantt chart from your team by the end of week 3. • Require a Budget Proposal from your team prior to week 11 of GP I. • Apply the material of the seminars to the project. Graduation Project Courses

  9. Advisor Responsibilities Evaluate each student performance during the semester. Provide feedback to your project team members upon receiving the Coordinator Evaluation Sheet. Require a copy of the report drafts at the prescribed dates in the schedule. Provide your team with a critical review of report content and writing style. Graduation Project Courses

  10. Coordinator Responsibilities • Ensure compliance with ABET-2000 Criteria for Capstone Design courses. • Meet with student teams on a weekly basis to evaluate their progress, presentation skills and class interaction (peer review). • Enhance critical thinking amongst teams of various disciplines. • Improve the skills of delivery of the assigned teams. • Ensure the utilization of lecture materials into the projects. 29. Graduation Projects Examination GuidelinesExamination Committee Members (ECMs) will observe the following guidelines: Graduation Project I:Ensure that each team fulfills the following: • Clarity of project objective: Examine if the project falls under a Design-Build or Design-Study ABET category. Any “research-like” or “term-paper-like” project is a strong candidate for a grade of “F”. • Approach Selection: Did the team consider several approaches? Which one did they choose from their literature search and why? Look at the presented justifications. • Plan: Is there a clear plan? This is simple and straightforward. If the team is not adhering to the proposed plan, then there is a lack in organization. • Preliminary Work/Results:For Project I, this is optional but guarantees high grade if all other elements are satisfied. • Consideration of Environmental, Economic, and/or Social Impact:Each project must have at least two of such elements. • Adherence to report guidelines:Make sure that the report is prepared according to the ‘Writing Report Guidelines’. Graduation Project II: Ensure that each team fulfills the following: • Same requirements as for Graduation Project I. • Results are a MUST. • What are the deliverables? Graduation Project Courses

  30. GP Proposal Directed to the Industry GP proposals that are directed to the Industry are encouraged and are prioritized Graduation Project Courses

  31. General Rules • Promptness: Deadlines should be met • Evaluation: Strict & fair • Discipline: It is the backbone of GP • Advisor meetings with students: 4 hrs/week • Cooperation will make this program a success • Feedback & objective comments are appreciated to improve the system • The Web Site should be visited frequently Graduation Project Courses
