  4. Facts • Most common HUMAN worm infection • Largest round worm to parasitize human body • 25% worlds population currently infected • ~1.5 billion people are infected (4 million in US)

  5. Life Cycle

Fecal- Oral Route Infected person poops -> eggs in feces -> person eats contaminated food/water -> eggs into digestive system -> hatch into larvae form -> burrow through intestine wall ->blood stream -> LUNGS -> coughed up and swallowed-> 2nd time in digestive tract (now mature) -> adults fertilize and females lay more eggs

  7. Where is it found? Warm and Humid climates Poverty Poor hygiene Rare in the US (poor, Southeastern US)

  8. Symptoms Mild infection: Severe infection: intestinal blockage, stunted growth, death 2 YO Female, 1986, 796 worms, 550g • little/no symptoms, abdominal discomfort

  9. Diagnosis Use microscope to ID eggs in stool sample Worms passed in stool Worms coughed up X-ray

  10. Treatment • -azole medication • Can cause: • Lack of ATP production in worms • Blocking of glucose uptake in worms • Worms to migrate to esophagus • Surgery • neglected tropical diseases • mass drug administration (deworming)
