  8. Gawain and Numbers • One is holy, God – it is the creator of all numbers. • This connects to the singularity of the Pearl – perfect circle, oneness of the divine creator

  9. Male and Female Numbers • Male odd – strong and can’t be split • Female even – weak easily divided • 1 and 2 are the parent numbers and together create 3, the first real, masculine number = trinity = corner stone of Christian doctrine as it is “fundamental to the Christian concept of Trinity

Numbers, Philosophy, Life • Augustine begins to apply to early Christian church • Divine Proportion – Golden mean, Extreme Ratio Phi – number and geometric patterns that are aesthetically pleasing – mathematical beauty – spiral of sea shells, etc. • The Author of Gawain and The Pearl was very aware of this and line numbers and breaks adhered to this proportion
