What the experts say Prof S Heppell Education advisor on schools for the future Merlin John Education journalist Robin Callister Architect
They are cramped The room is claustrophobic Plain, simple Dull In the simplest words they are BORING!
Our research • We found out that a whopping 90% of our interviewees enjoyed working at home. • We asked a group of students if they could bring one piece of furniture from home what would it be 70% said sofas 10% said their TV and another 20% said their dining room table. • We found out that pupils would like to work in a greener enviroment. • And our biggest find was pupils would prefer to use technology to enhance their learning rather than books.
Green Research • Insulation- Triple Glazing provides heat and protects us from loud distracting noises (e.g. planes)this also works with foam board as these help keep heat in and absorb sound • Geo- thermal- pumps cold water down to hot rocks and uses the steam as a form of heating! • Smart material on the windows they open and close as it gets warmer/colder we researched these but they are too expensive • Wind turbine- indirect energy which can charge special batteries which make it energy you could use for lighting and computer etc.
Green Research • Movement sensors- no movement or heat energy detected the lights turn off how cool is that! • Solar panels can provide heat for warm water • Water butts that collect water to be filtered ready to be • drunk or to be used to water the plants • Recycling boxes for glass, cans, paper, etc. • And of course a compost bin • Low energy light bulbs • Bird bath, bug box, hedgehog box • Bird house
Our ideas We wanted a greener design but to keep it cheap at the same time so we came up with these. Water butts Wind turbine Plants Solar panels Bird bath Etc.
Using Sketch up Using google Skecthup was harder than we thought at first it was very difficult but then with more experience we learned how to use it properly.
