GLOSSARY AND WORD ORIGIN • East India company : The company which come to India and settled at Calcutta (now Kolkata) to carry out their trade activities during the later half of the 18th century . • Mutiny: The situation when the soldiers as a group disobey the orders of their officers in the army is termed mutiny . • Firangis : A name given to the foreigners (British) out of contempt and hatred. • Sepoy : The soldiers .

These are participation by people in the decision – making process and government by consent. • The Parliament in our system has immense powers because it is the representative of the people. • Election to the Parliament are held in a similar manner as they are for the legislature. • The loksabha is usually elected once every five years. • The country is divided into numerous constituencies . Each of these constituencies elects one person to the parliament.
