The Berlin Conference • Increased competition amongst European powers to take advantage of both natural resources and the markets for goods in Africa. • Instead of fighting --> divided it up amongst the most powerful countries in Europe. • Done at the Berlin Conference in 1884, called by the German P.M. Otto von Bismarck. • Attended by European government representatives but there were no Africans
Before the Berlin Conference • African borders as we know them did not exist • At the conference the borders were decided upon with no consideration for the people living in these areas
After the Berlin Conference • The new borders cut through over 170 tribal or ethnic groups • Divided natural cultural and language groups and caused enormous social problems • Families and neighbours were split up and found themselves living in different countries with different rulers, countries and names • 46 different countries at end of the Scramble for Africa
