  3. First inter-colonial conference of Chamber delegates, from Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, held in Adelaide, 1887.

Carbon Tax • Reducing pollution is the right goal • All countries share one atmosphere so it’s a global issue • China emits 7 billion tonnes per year • Australia emits 400 million tonnes • China’s emissions increased by 700 million tonnes last year • Emissions per head means Luxembourg is biggest polluter and China doesn’t appear in top 20 • Australia could go to zero emissions and it would have zero impact • Price or carbon in NZ is $12 • Price of carbon in Europe is $18 • Greens want $40 plus • Manufacturing employs 1 million Australians • Government prepared to sacrifice manufacturing for mining • All businesses will feel the impact • NSWBC – if pollies can’t say no - then start low and go slow • ACCI ad campaign

The future …….. • Business regulation is migrating to federal sphere eg Workplace Relations, OH&S, Consumer Protection, Corporate Law, Business Registration etc • Payroll tax is still a state issue but for how long ? • Large members seeking nationally consistent advice & services • Large members seeking access / influence with federal politicians • Long term aim should be strong voice of business & service delivery platform at local, regional, state, federal and global level • Key challenge is to have optimal structure and resource utilisation for national Chamber movement
