Task • Describe the location of the biggest cities in 1950. (Hints: Use the names of continents /MEDC /LEDC/ northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, tropics, and names of cities as evidence) 2. Describe the location of the biggest cities in 2005. 3. Compare the 2 sets of cities – what are the similarities and the differences?
So why are LEDC cities growing so rapidly? Reason 1: many countries are in stage 2 or 3 of the DTM, so the populations living in cities are growing rapidly (high fertility rates - most city dwellers are in 20s and 30s and falling death rates = natural increase).

Reason 2: Rural to Urban Migration PUSH FACTORS • Poverty • Farm machinery e.g. Tractors causing unemployment • Land shortages due to rising populations • Food shortages and famines • Lack of services e.g. Piped water, electricity, secondary schools • Lack of jobs other than farming • Traditional ways of life • Lack of entertainment PULL FACTORS • Better paid jobs • Work in factories, offices and shops • Reliable food supplies • Secondary schools and universities • Hospitals • Clean water and electricity supplies • Good transport • Excitement & constant change • Entertainment e.g. Cinemas, pubs, clubs....
