  3. Acts 10: 1 – “Now in Caesara there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of the Cohort called the Italica...” • Luke 7:2 – healing of a centurion’s slave • Unlike Mark’s Gospel, Luke’s does not show Christ interacting with Gentiles. • Great omission

  4. Joppa • Acts 10:5, 23  Jonah 1:3 “But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD” • Just like Jonah began his ministry to the Gentiles from Joppa, so does Peter in Acts.

  5. Acts 10:9-16 • 10:13-14 “A voice said to him, ‘Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.’ But Peter said, “Certainly not, sir. For never have I eaten anythin profane and unclean.” • Ezekiel 4:14“ ‘Oh no Lord’ I protested. ‘ Never have I been made unclean, and from my youth till now,… never has any unclean meat entered my mouth.” • Lev 11:1-47 • Duet 14: 3-21

Lev 11: 1-8 “The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth. Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat. Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you. Likewise, the shaphan, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you; the rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you; and the pig, for though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, it does not chew cud, it is unclean to you. You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

Duet 14: 3-7 • "You shall not eat any detestable thing.  These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. Any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat. Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these among those which chew the cud, or among those that divide the hoof in two: the camel and the rabbit and the shaphan, for though they chew the cud, they do not divide the hoof; they are unclean for you.” • Modern day Judaism and Islam.

Mark 7: 1-23  7:15-16 “Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.” • Acts 11:1-3 “Now the apostles and the brethren who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.  And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those who were circumcised took issue with him saying, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” • The Council of Jerusalem- Galatians 2:11-14

  9. 10:15b “What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.” • Does not only apply to food, but to Gentile community. • 10:28 “ You know that it is unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with, or visit, a Gentile, but God has shown me that I should not call any person profance or clean.”

  10. 10:34- 35“Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, ‘ In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.’” • Deuteronomy 10:17"For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.” • 2 Chronicles 19:7 “Now then let the fear of the LORD be upon you; be very careful what you do, for the LORD our God will have no part in unrighteousness or partiality or the taking of a bribe." • Romans 2:11; Galatians 2:6; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 3:25; 1 Peter 1:17

Peter’s Speech Acts 10:38-43 • "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross. • Matthew 4: 23 “Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.” • Acts 2:22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know”

God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible, not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead. Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins." • Luke 24:41 You are witnesses of these things. • Luke 24: 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. • Matthew 28:  19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” • Matthew 26:28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

  13. The Holy Spirit • Acts 11:15-16 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' • Acts 2: 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. • Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33, Acts 1:5 • Holy Spirit : • The first disciples are "baptized with the Holy Spirit" at Pentecost (11:15-16). • God "will pour out" his Spirit on all people and all nations in the last days (2:17-18, 33; 10:45). • The Spirit "speaks to" the apostles and prophets (10:19 ,11:12). • Baptism10:38, 47
