Maybe you wonder what it is, Makes people good or bad;Why some guy, an ace without a doubt, Turns out to be a bastard, And the other way about.I'll tell you what I feel:It's just the nickel under the heel.... With the failure of the U.S. economy and all the related misery, the Great Depression was a period ripe for protest. The Broadway play, The Cradle will Rock, written by Marc Blitzstein, attacked the American system of capitalism itself, suggesting that the capitalist love of money corrupts all individuals or institutions within that society—everyone eventually sells out. On opening night, June 16, 1937, the government tried to prevent the play from opening by filing an injunction and padlocking the doors to the theater in which it was to be performed; but the actors and audience walked 20 blocks to another vacant theater, and the show went on (without props or costumes). A song from the production is called “The Nickel Under the Foot,” sung by a prostitute who is thrilled for a moment thinking she has found and stepped on a nickel. Disappointed that she is mistaken, the song goes on to illustrate the evils of capitalism: And if you're sweet, then you'll grow rotten;Your pretty heart covered over with soot.And if for once you're gay, And devil-may-careless, and oh, so hot...I know you've gotThat nickel under your foot Research: “The Nickel Under the Foot.” Dec 6 2010. <http://labornotes.org/node/889>.
