  2. Certification • Consists of 3 categories: • Classification • Provides opportunity for entry level farriers • Certification • Center of the program • Endorsement • Provides opportunities for farriers who have completed highest level of certification

  3. Certification • All levels are expected to demonstrate: • Hoof trimming skills • Skills to apply shoes and other appliances in exact prescriptions • Forging skills to modify shoes • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology

  4. AFA Farrier Classification • Entry-level component • Not a pre-requisite for subsequent certification • Focuses on basic concerns • Safe, sound farriery • No time constraints • Elementary Forge work • Must complete written and practical testing • Horseshoe display

  5. AFA Farrier Classification • Written Test 70% • Bones and Joints • Identify and locate • Hoof Structure • Knowledge of elastic and inelastic structures • Tendons and Ligaments • Common/Scientific Names • Functions and insertion of all tendons and ligaments

AFA Farrier Classification • Written Test 70% • Blood Circulation • Function of arteries, capillaries, and veins • Pathology • Recognizing factors associated with lameness • Horseshoes • Nail placement, design and function, features, function of heartbar shoe • Conformation, Gaits, and Physiology • All gaits, problems, and faults

  7. AFA Farrier Classification • Practical Exam (2 parts) • Must Obtain 60% to Pass • A. Shoeing • Hands-on Performance Exam • Shoe 2 feet • Front pair or hind pair • Candidate must provide horse and handler • 1 ½ hour time limit

  8. AFA Farrier Classification • A. Shoeing • Scoring in Three Parts • Hoof Preparation • Shoe preparation and Fit • Nailing, clinching, and finishing

  9. AFA Farrier Classification • B. Horseshoe Display • Candidates bring • Examined and scored • Includes Timed Modifications • Oral/explanation/defense

  10. Certified Farrier (AFA CF) • First Level of AFA Certification • Open to farriers with one year experience • Must Perform: • Written Exam 80% • Practical Exam 70% • 1 hour time limit • Horseshoe Display

  11. Certified Tradesman Farrier (AFA CTF) • Second Level – Optional • Two Years Experience • Completed CF level • Written Exam 80% • Practical Exam 70% • Forging • ¾ Fullered, open heel shoe • Must fit pattern • 30 Minute Time Limit

  12. Certified Journeyman Farrier (AFA CJF) • Highest Level • 2 years experience • Completed CF level • Must display: • In depth knowledge and highly developed skills • Requires: • Written Exam 80% • Practical Exam 70% • Forging of specific bar shoe within time limit • Shoe must fit pre-determined foot pattern

  13. Specialty Endorsements • CJF have opportunity to continue education • Particular breeds • Disciplines • Veterinarians • Endorsements Include: • Therapeutic • Specialty Forging • Educational
