1. This is a true story of doing business with Thales, a company that goes to great lengths to establish its ethical credentials .
Make sure it doesn't happen to you!
2. From the chairman
3. Who are we ? We are Matthew PITT & David GILES
We owned and managed a small, 6-man, business that supplied Thales for 5 years with custom computer display equipment.
We were set up with the help of Thales, because they needed a supplier.
We achieved ISO9001 and passed Thales own quality vetting.
We developed very specialist, very low volume interactive display solutions.
We designed 39 display types at no charge to Thales we owned the design rights!
We delivered around 600 units over a 5 year period
We handled 180 repairs, most of which were on equipment not manufactured by us.
We worked very closely with Thales technical teams, programme managers and purchasing. Thales was our number one customer and we looked after them.
We had never had any formal complaints about our products or service and had only one quality issue raised in 5 years, which we corrected at no charge.
We ceased to trade in 2007 after Thales changed just one employee!
4. A published Ethical Policy
Thales say they will treat suppliers ethically
with honesty, apply fairness, discuss problems, seek solutions, yada, yada, yada .
Well thats good, you can expect a fair hearing at least then!
Thales also trained its staff!
All Thales Group purchasing staff received training in the Code of Ethics, while 80 purchasers
completed specific training in ethical business principles

5. So what happened? In 2006 Thales allowed a rogue employee Carolyne Trew to execute a personal agenda. That employee:
Cancelled major contacts and lied about the reasons.
Reneged on verbal commitments and claimed they were never made.
After which Thales own legal department claimed ownership of our designs and had our products manufactured by third parties!
6. Who is Carolyne Trew ?
7. more about Mrs Trew! Mrs TREW clearly takes her position seriously and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, an organisation intent on improving professional standards in this area. In fact Mrs TREW has been chair of the local branch of the CIPS
Mrs TREW had no direct dealings with our company until her temporary appointment. Her first contact was a telephone call to David GILES which opened with I am Mrs Trew, Head of Purchasing at Thales and unless you get those two repairs back to me by Monday you can kiss goodbye to any future business [Source: David GILES, who remembers it clearly, never having been spoken to like that in 25 years of customer relationships. In fact the items in question were NOT repairs and needed Thales engineers to approve design changes]
Mrs TREW also fabricated events relating to a meeting held on 23rd September 2006, claiming that our company was told it was down-selected to one of two suppliers. In fact we were told we had been awarded the work; present at the meeting were the Thales programme manager and the relevant purchasing officer. This is a second example of lies and deceit. Further details follow.
