The Physical Components of Matter Ms. Atjai
What is Matter? • Content Area: Students will gain an understanding of matter and each one of its physical changes. • Grade Level: 5th Grade • Learning Objective: Given the information about matter students will decipher the differences between materials physical changes. • Summary: The purpose of this lesson is for students to establish a greater understanding of the physical changes matter goes through. The rising and falling of temperature allows a substance to change forms. Students will gain knowledge on how this occurs. • Content standard: 0507.9.2 Investigate how different types of materials freeze, melt, evaporate, or dissipate. • Accomplishments: Understanding of what is matter. How matter is a part of our everyday lives. The various forms matter is able to change into physically. Understanding of the different physical changes matter is able to go through.
What is Matter? • I pose the question what is matter ? • Give me an example
What is Matter? • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. • There are three states of matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas
Properties of a Solid Which one of these is a property of a solid? • is invisible • becomes the shape of the container its in • does not change shape easily
Properties of a Liquid Which one of these is a property of a liquid? • is invisible • becomes the shape of the container its in • does not change shape easily
Properties of a Gas Which one of these is a property of Gas? • is invisible • becomes the shape of the container its in • does not change shape easily
Skill Challenge • Take a sheet of paper out and your scissors • Now cut the paper into 4 pieces • Write down on your observation paper what has changed • How has it changed • What happened to the molecules in the paper where it was cut?
How Temperature Changes Matter Physically • Solid Water aka Ice • Water freezes molecules move farther apart, making ice less dense than water • Note: Ice is lighter than water which holds the same volume • Freezing temperature of water 0 Celsius = 32 Fahrenheit • Vapor aka Water as a Gas • Always around us in the air • Not visual • Boiling water changes from a liquid to a gas or water vapor • At sea level steam is formed at 100 Celsius = 212 Fahrenheit

Summary Students have learned the basic components of matter. How matter changes in a physical form The three types of physical properties How temperature affects the change of a physical object Students have gained an understanding of how physical properties change and how molecules are affected
