  2. Getting Started

  3. Getting Started • There are three main ways to create a document using Publisher: • Publications by wizard • Publications by design • Blank publications

  4. Publications by Wizard • First, we need to select a category • You will select the category based on need • If you need a standard sign, select sign • If you need a special event flyer, select flyer • Second, select the file you need • If you wanted a sign, find the sign that fits your need

  5. Publications by Wizard • We are going to get started by creating a standard sign • To find out what signs are available in the Wizard, click signs in the menu

  6. Publications by Wizard • Notice the signs now showing • Use the scroll bar to the far right to see all the documents in this category • Select the sign you want to create

  7. Publications by Wizard • Let’s create a sign to put on the office door • Publisher happens to have a sign that says “Authorized Personnel Only” • Double click on this sign

  8. Publications by Wizard • When you double click on the sign, you will not that a new screen pops up with the sign much larger…

  9. Publications by Wizard • Notice the wizard still allows you to makes changes • If you click on design it will take you to other signs • Click on color scheme to change the color

  10. Publications by Wizard • If the signs says what you want it to say, you are ready to print • First, hide the wizard • Now print • Go to file • Print

  11. Publications by Wizard

  12. Publications by Wizard • Now let’s create a flyer • What is the difference between the sign and flyer? • The sign is meant to be complete – Authorized Personnel or Wet Paint • The flyer is meant to be customized to fit your needs

  13. Publications by Wizard • Take a look at the flyer category • Notice all the different flyer designs • Notice that there are categories within the flyer category • Including informational, special offer, sale, event, fund raiser and more

  14. Publications by Wizard

  15. Publications by Wizard • Take a moment to scroll through and see the different possibilities • Let’s make a flyer for a book sale • Notice as you scroll that there is a set flyer for book sale • Double click on this flyer

  16. Publications by Wizard • After you select (or double click) the book sale flyer, you will again have the option of changing things • For now let’s hide the wizard and work with the template

  17. Publications by Wizard • To see the document better, increase the size by using the menu bar at the top of the document • Select the arrow next to the box with the size percentage to alter • Or use the plus or minus sign

  18. Publications by Wizard • Change your view to 75 percent • Scroll to the top of the page where the flyer template says Date: 00/00/00 • To change the date, click once on the default date and notice that it is highlighted • Type in Saturday’s date – 04/07/02

  19. Publications by Wizard • Notice that the date changes • Click in the box at the top right – notice the default text • Change the text by writing a short paragraph about your upcoming sale

  20. Publications by Wizard • Next, list several of the items you feel will be very popular – the ones that will draw a crowd • As you scroll down, notice Publisher prompts you to describe your location – do this now • Next Publisher prompts you to put in the standard contact information • Finally, list the time of your event

  21. Publications by Wizard • Contact Information • Contact information is something you will want on everything you create for your library • Publisher lets you set this information up once

  22. Publications by Wizard • Contact options • Choose primary or secondary business, other organization or home/family • Update it as often as you need • Next time you create a new flyer, this information is there

  23. Publications by Wizard • To add your contact information click on “show wizard” – which is the same button as the hide wizard we used earlier • From the box select Personal Information • And now Update Information • Fill in the information and click update • Notice the change on your document

  24. Publications by Wizard • Let’s go back over our flyer: • Have you changed the date? • Have you changed the copy or paragraph at the top right corner? • Have you added several key items? • Have you updated your contact info? • Have you changed the time?

  25. Publications by Wizard • To save your finished book sale flyer, go to File in the menu bar and select save as • When the new window pops up, find the file where you want to save and click ok

  26. Publications by Design • The main difference in publications by wizard and publications by design is that one shows you items by category (wizard) and the others by design • Both of these options provide you with valuable assistance and prompting from the software

  27. Publications by Design

  28. Publications by Design • Notice that you have several choices under the design option • Master Sets • Special Event Sets • Fund-raiser Sets • And more…

  29. Publications by Design • Let’s make a flyer using the fund-raiser set • In the menu bar on the left, select fund-raiser • Then select Quadrants • And then Quadrants Fund-raiser Flyer • Double click on this item

  30. Publications by Design • We are going to do several things: • Change the color scheme • Change the basic information on the flyer • Change the graphic • Change the contact information • And delete the logo

  31. Publications by Design • To change the color select Color Scheme in the menu bar on the left • Then select the scheme you want

  32. Publications by Design • Once you have changed the color, hit the Hide Wizard button and increase the size of your document (hint: do this in the menu bar) • To change the information, we will start at the top where it has a place for our business name and slogan – this can be entered automatically based on the contact information we have created

  33. Publications by Design • Now add in the Event Title • Let’s have a Friends of the Library Barbecue • Change the date and time • Write a short paragraph about our event • And now it is time to change the graphic • Why? Because the sunrise doesn’t fit with our BBQ

  34. Publications by Design • To change a picture click on the picture and notice the pop-up window • Select change picture • You have a choice of from file or clip art

  35. Publications by Design • When you select clip art a menu window pops up • You may select a category or type in a key word • Type in Barbecue • Now library

  36. Publications by Design • After we have selected a new graphic for our flyer, we need to make sure the contact information is correct • Practice changing the contact information by retyping in the boxes on your page or by changing the information under the wizard • Now we are going to get rid of the logo, because our Friends group has no logo

  37. Publications by Design • To cut a graphic (or logo) simply use the right click on your mouse – your cursor must be on the object you want to delete • And select cut from the pop up menu

  38. Publications by Design • Now we are ready to proof the flyer • And then it is time to save it • And finally print it! • Congratulations • you have made a sign and two flyers in Publisher ~ you are on your way!
