  1. Scientific Method

  2. 1. Making an Observation • Must know something is happening/going on • Sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell may be used to do this

  3. 2. Asking a Question • This focuses the purpose of the investigation

  4. 3. Forming a hypothesis • This step is done after observations and asking questions • Is a possible explanation or answer to a question • Must be testable

  5. 4. Testing the hypothesis • This helps to determine if hypothesis was good or bad • Will contain factors called variables • Information acquired during this step is known as data

  6. 5. Analyzing Results • This step is done after collecting and recording data. • Information may be made into charts, graphs, or reports in this step

  7. 6. Draw Conclusions • This is done at the end of an investigation • Results will either support, or NOT support the hypothesis • May decide to experiment again or form a NEW hypothesis

  8. EXAMPLE: • Remember the steps: • Make an observation • Ask questions • Form a hypothesis • Test the hypothesis • Analyze results • Draw conclusions

  9. Need a male volunteer! EXAMPLE

  10. EXAMPLE • There will be a back to school dance Saturday night in the big gym.

  11. EXAMPLE – Ask questions • Do I want to go to the dance • Does it cost anything • What do wear • Who can I go with • ?????????????????????????????????? • YES, am going, need a date

  12. EXAMPLE – form hypothesis • I will ask _______________ to go to the dance with me. • How????

  13. Ask her YES, NO, MAYBE EXAMPLE – Test hypothesis

  14. NO – 6 times Maybe – 2 EXAMPLE – Analyze Results

  15. EXAMPLE - Retest • YES

  16. Draw Conclusions • Didn’t work • Kinda worked/Maybe • Worked
