  3. Technology Vision – A Path Forward… Mission Statement: “St. Cyril of Jerusalem is committed to the empowerment of our students, faculty and parents through the use of traditional learning tools and technology.” Goal: Continuous improvement through better planning, execution and communication

  4. Review of May 2012 Meeting Information Session • Explored programs at other schools • Guest speaker shared her school iPad program • Discussed starting One-to-One Program at St. Cyril Survey Went Out • Captured opinions of the families

Progress Report: May 2012 to Now A lot has been accomplished: • 10 Mbps broadband internet connectivity has been cabled and activated throughout the school • 16 Wi-Fi secure access points have been installed • 80 student iPadshave been purchased, configured, and are actively being used • Staff members have participated in 60+ hours of professional development on curriculum integration and technology strategies in the classroom • Applications that support learning are being vetted and incorporated in grades K – 8 This is just the beginning….

Addressed the Problems • Examples: • Conflict between DWP and the Internet Service Providers prevented the acquisition of increased broadband • Broadband connectivity increases were required to support the schools needs. • This took longer due to city permitting issues. • Broadband connectivity was finally installed in December 2012

March 2013 Status Report • Wireless access up and running around campus • 80 student iPads on 2 separate carts are being used daily in classrooms • Continuous coaching for teachers on effective integration and implementation of technology • Dependable connectivity has expanded the use of Smartboards in classrooms • There is still more to do…

Technology Integration • Description of the Process • A major focus in the classroom this year is integrating • technology in the curriculum to further learning • From Smart-Phones to iPads to Smart-Boards, teachers are turning tools of technology into instruments of education. • Teachers are able to create visually stimulating and engaging PowerPoint presentations • Connect them to the content • Make abstract concepts concrete and tangible • Smart-Board Technology • It is like a giant dry-erase board and iPad all-in-one. • A fantastic teaching and learning tool typically used on a daily basis in many classrooms.

Technology Integration • Application Evaluation Process • Review current academic research • Research success stories from other other schools • Apply scoring based on application quality, cost and ability to support the curriculum and balance the learning • Pilot the best applications in the classroom • Inventory applications for each grade level • New Application by Grade Level (sample) • CORE APPS (School Wide): Educreation, Popplet, Screencasting, Edmodo • Primary Grades (K, 1, 2): Toontastic, Harper Collins, Phonics Vowels, Memory!, ABC Touch • Middle Elementary (3, 4, 5): Trading Cards, Tap Quiz Maps, Splash Math • Junior High (6, 7, 8): Google Sketchup, QR, History Channel, The Revolution

Technology Integration • 8th Grade Examples: • Student teams worked together to created six brand new government states. • They needed to figure out names, flags, laws to govern the people and someone to represent them. • Once they have elected a representative, those 6 special people discussed and debated and decided on the laws that will govern all 6 United States. • They used Keynote to work together on a unified team presentation all on their iPad tablets. • This is real life collaboration. • Student also learning to use the tablets as a research tool • Students used the iPad as a resource to find selections of The History Channel’s “The Story of the U.S.” to gain a very accurate historical view of America through the Revolutionary War.

Technology Integration • 7th Grade Examples: • Students learn how to create their own Quick Response (QR) codes and integrate them into their own projects. • Students are also using PowerPoint and Keynote to create digital presentations in Social Studies • Using the “Screencasting” application, student create their own sentences diagraming lessons will multiple parts of speech and multiple parts of a sentence. • During the 2012 election season, students were introduced to the concept of polling.

Technology Integration • 6th Grade Examples: • Students create graphic organizers for literary terms that have been presented in class. • They use an iPad app called Poppletwhich allows students to connect ideas and information. • Students provide evidence of the literary terms. They add visual aids (pictures) to enhance the overall presentation. • In Grammar students are using interactive Smart-Board lessons to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of pronouns. • “They can hardly contain themselves! Seriously...they are jumping out of their seats to get to the board and show what they know.”
