6th Grade Parent Meeting East Cobb Middle School March 14, 2012
Georgia Curriculums Otherwise known as Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
Common Core State Mathematic Standards Initiative • State-led • Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) • National Governors Association (NGA)
Why do we need common standards? Why now? Disparate standards Different skills Global competition Preparation for career/college
Why is This Important for Students, Teachers, and Parents? College and work Consistent expectations Clear, focused guide
Key Features of the Standards • Rigorous content with application • Evidence and research • Internationally benchmarked
Math Key Advances Focus in early grades on number Even pacing Using math and solving complex problems Problem-solving and communication
Standards of Mathematical Practice • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (ability to explain) • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (make sense of quantities) • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (justify why) • Model with mathematics. (graphs, formulas, etc…) • Use appropriate tools strategically. (manipulatives, calculators, etc…) • Attend to precision. (state meaning of symbols) • Look for and make use of structure. (patterns) • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (repeated calculations-shortcuts)
