  1. WELCOME BACK! As we begin the New Year, high school is just ahead. In a few weeks, you’ll register for high school classes and make your 4-YEAR PLAN. This unit is designed to get you thinking about Power and Society. We’ll start by looking at colleges and careers, and reading nonfiction articles on topics relevant to your individual success in the larger society. To get us started, answer these questions: ONLY WRITE THE BOTTOM QUESTIONS! What do you want to be when you grow up? Where do you see yourself in five years (your freshman year of college)? How are you going to achieve these goals?

  3. Go to www.careercruising.comUser ID: oakmountainmsPassword: shelbyClick on the first tab on the left “Explore Assessments”

  4. Then click on “Career Matchmaker”

  5. Read the given instructions and hit “Start.” Answer 39 questions indicating potential careers.

  6. The next screen will give you a list of potential careers. Listen for instructions on saving the results. You can always tell it not to save initially, and save later using the “Save to My Portfolio” tab.

  7. Part II: My Skills Back on the Explore Assessments screen, click on “My Skills.” Read the given instructions and hit “Go.” Answer the 45 questions indicating your personal skills

  8. The next screen will put the letters “A,” “B,” or “C” by the resulting career matches, indicating how well your skills correspond with your career interests.

  9. Copy and paste the results list into the Career Cruising Suggested Careers form. Print this out and put it in your portfolio.

  10. Select the occupation that most interests you.Review the “Suitable for You?” screen. Using the Job Description tab in the General Information menu on the left, complete the corresponding section on your Occupation Profile. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!

  11. Using the Sample Career Path tab, complete the Job Duties and Salary Range sections of your Profile. Look through the Photofile pictures and read the corresponding captions.Read at least one of the Interviews and use the information to complete the Interview section of your Profile.

  12. Part IV: College ProfileYou can also use Career Cruising to learn more about potential colleges. Career Cruising will give you an overview of the school and a link to its website. Click on Search for Schools and follow the instructions on the screen.

  13. Use the Menu on the left side of the screen to find information on admission requirements, expenses, student life, etc.

  14. Complete three of these profiles – one on your dream school, one on a “safety” school, and one a school that falls somewhere in between.

  15. Also to be completed for the project • College Selection Rationale: Weigh the pros and cons of each school and explain your decision in a one-page, typed, double-spaced essay • Personal Reflection: Answer the “So What” question. What did you learn from this project? What did you find surprising? How will this help you make plans for your immediate and long-term future. This should be typed and double-spaced as well.
