The Basics • A concept map is a way to graphically represent relationships between ideas, images, or words • Helps to generate ideas and creativity • Concepts are represented in boxes or circles • Concepts are connected with linking phrases • Different than a Mind Map
How to Concept Map • Start with the major idea at the top of the page; • Shift down the page from more complex, to less complex ideas; • Connecting phrases must link each idea; • Cross links can be made between concepts, or across the page; • Examples may be added.
The Process • Brainstorm individually and in a group the main ideas of a concept; • Write these ideas down on paper, or if available, post-it notes; • Sort and classify the ideas, looking for relationships; • Transfer the ideas onto a large sheet of paper; • Draw lines and inserting linking words or phrases; • Look for additional relationships between concepts.
