Testicles/Testes • Two small glands that produce sperm at the rate of 100 million per day • Hang outside the body in the Scrotum • Protects sperm by keeping the testes at a temperature slightly below normal body temp.
Penis • Tube-shaped organ attached to the trunk of the body just above the testes • Composed of spongy tissue (contains many blood vessels) • Penis becomes enlarged and erect because of increased blood flow or sexual arousal • Circumcision – surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis

Epididymis • Coiled tube • Temporary storage facility for sperm • Where sperm mature
Vas Deferens • Pair of connecting tubes • About 18 inches long • Lead up the body to the seminal vesicles and prostate gland • Thick muscle walls propel the sperm forward in powerful spurts
Seminal Vesicles • Glands that are about 2 inches long • Attached to Vas Deferens • At the base of the bladder • Fluid • Contains nutrients • Mixes with sperm to make more mobile • Seminal Vesicles and Vas Deferens form to make: Ejaculatory Duct
Prostate Gland and Cowper’s Gland • Prostate Gland • Gland that surrounds the Urethra • Cowper’s Gland • Located below prostate gland • Secretion neutralizes the acid content before semen ejaculated • Fluids secreted by both Glands • Semen (Seminal Fluid) fully formed
Urethra • Passageway through which both semen and urine leave the body. • Semen and urine do not pass the body at the same time • Muscle near bladder contracts • Prevents urine from entering urethra when semen is present
Hernia • Part of an organ pushes through an open membrane or muscle • Common spot is top of scrotum
Sterility • Condition in which a person is unable to reproduce • Too Few Sperm or sperm of poor quality • Temporary Sterility • Tight Clothing • Extreme Cold • Illness • Permanent Sterility • X Rays • Radiation or Chemical exposure • Having Mumps as an older child • Smoking • Impotence – inability to maintain an erection
Enlarged Prostate Gland • Enlarges due to: • Infection • Tumor • Old age • Squeezes the urethra causing in frequent or difficult urination. • Treatments: • Special exercises to improve bladder control • Medications to shrink enlarged prostate • Surgery to remove excess tissue
Cancer • Uncontrolled growth of cells • Prostate Gland • Usually found in older males • Testes • Most frequently found in males 15-35 yrs old. • Slight enlargement of one of the testes • Dull ache in lower abdomen and groin, Hard lumps • If caught early can be cured
