Strategic Plan of Yuba College Library Cori Schmidtbauer + 4 Group Members
Introduction The Yuba College Library is a central environment for patrons to study, relax, and socialize. More importantly, students, faculty, and community members can learn, find, and use the many information resources – circulation and reference help, digital references, online databases, interlibrary loan – that the library offers. The Yuba College Library will hopefully meet its goals and projected outcomes, becoming better equipped to implement its services and resources to meet user needs.
Goal 1 • Provide Students With Formal Library and Literacy Instruction • Offer formal library instruction in research skills, information literacy, media and digital literacy, to both traditional and online students. • Require that all students take a Library Science introduction course. • Offer drop-in library workshops throughout the semester, rather than only at the beginning of each semester. • Hire an Instructional Librarian to teach these courses. • Presented by Group Member 1
Goal 2 • Offer a Space of Innovation and Research • Extend library hours • Form cooperative relationships with other libraries and network within library associations and conferences while utilizing WMS services • Maintain a sufficient staff to accommodate research needs of patrons • Establish a productive learning environment • Utilize technological advancements and ensure optimal connectivity • Presented by Group Member 2
Goal 3 • Identify faculty and student needs to ensure the library’s collection consists of materials relevant to the college’s courses and groups. • Review course syllabi, prepare supporting materials, and notify faculty of available relevant materials • Identify and procure materials relevant to the diverse groups on campus and within the residential community • Create marketing campaign to encourage student, staff, and faculty feedback of library services and resources • Presented by Group Member 3
Goal 4 • Independently support, maintain and replace library technology resources, and offer training to students and faculty on utilizing technical materials. • Hire IT support personnel solely for library • Allow library staff to have knowledge of IT administrator passwords • Train student workers and interns to provide technological support to college students and faculty • Presented by Cori Schmidtbauer
Goal 5 • Make effective use of the newly remodeled and renovated Yuba College Library facility enacted by Measure J, a $190 million resolution for improvements to the campus. • Equip the library with the most contemporary resources available • Conduct open houses throughout thee semester for prospective students, faculty, the community, and higher education officials • Offer meeting rooms for community events • Allow high school students to utilize the facility • Presented by Group Member 5
Conclusion Accomplishing these goals would greatly improve the Yuba College Library as an organization. However, factors such as the current economic climate and available funding must be considered. Fortunately, $190 million from a Measure J resolution, decided by the local community, provides funding and the opportunity for the library to reinvent and market its services; however, the library must be cautious of adding too many services as they can be hard to maintain financially.
