  1. The Heart Of The Task Make Disciples Matthew 28:18-20 Mark 16:15 Luke 24:46-47 John 20:21-23

  2. Matthew 28:18-20 Only one Greek verb is in the imperative. The command to make disciples. This command is the one and only command.

  3. Make Disciples Details of Make Disciples: • “As you go” or “going” • “Of all nations” • “Baptizing” • “Teaching them to obey”

  4. King Jesus’ Command Jesus does not enter the lives of His followers as a helpful adjunct to make things better, more enjoyable, or more fulfilling. He enters to take full possession of that which is rightfully His. Ephesians 5:30 “For we are members of His body.”

  5. Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it.” Matthew 16:24-25 HCSB

  6. King Jesus’ Command The Great Commission is not an option but a command from the One who has full authority to command whatever He wants from us. Jesus is Lord, His lordship lays the necessary foundation for missions, and He gives His people both the authorization and the obligation to fulfill His global task.

  7. Global Mission The best translation of panta ta ethne is “all people/ethnic groups” rather than “all nations” Jesus followed the entire thrust of biblical revelation in making it clear that God’s heart is global. “With your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.” Revelation 5:9

  8. Global Mission God sees the globe as a mosaic of people groups, far more numerous and complex than the political map of the world. The task of missions will not be fulfilled until there are disciples of Jesus Christ among every people group on earth. Revelation 21:22-27

  9. I did not see a sanctuary in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its sanctuary. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because God’s glory illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Each day its gates will never close because it will never be night there. They will bring the glory and honor of the nations into it. Nothing profane will ever enter it: no one who does what is vile or false, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Revelation 22:22-27 HCSB

  10. Discipleship A disciple is more than a convert or student. In Jesus’ day, education was not carried out in the impersonal classroom. Each teacher would gather around him “learner-followers” who would enter into a full-time relationship with him. They would live with him and go around and observe his life and teaching.

  11. The Goal of Missions Jesus commanded His disciples to make other disciples who would also be learner-followers, who would walk intimately with Jesus (now through His Spirit), who would imbibe not only the teaching of Jesus but also His character and way of life, and who would become so much like Jesus that they would remind people of Him.

  12. Decisions or Discipleship Too much preaching avoids the meaning and cost of discipleship. People then wonder why the attrition rate in churches is so high. Biblical conversion is conversion to discipleship, not conversion to a fire insurance policy, and a “convert” with no commitment to a life of discipleship may very well not be born again at all!

  13. The Gospel and Guilt In reality, one goal of the gospel is to shatter people’s self-esteem and to drive home to them that they are guilty sinners. The only way to heaven is through brokenness, humility, and repentance.

  14. The Gospel in the Church We will never make disciples unless we are disciples ourselves, because we will never embrace separation from family and the very real possibility of discomfort, danger, and suffering unless we have grasped that we are not our own and that we exist for His glory. One of the essential components of the GC task of making disciples is that we must go where there aren’t yet disciples.

  15. Teach Obedience A disciple must be more than simply a knowledge-gatherer. In the process of making disciples, we must teach knowledge; furthermore, we must also teach obedience to everything that Jesus commanded.

  16. Conclusion The authority for missions lies in the sovereign Lordship of Jesus Christ, who has all authority in heaven and on earth. The heart of the task is to make disciples, who have been baptized as a symbol of their radical new commitment to Jesus, and who are taught both to know and to obey everything Jesus commanded. The scope of the task is all people groups on earth. God’s provision for the task is the all-sufficient presence of Jesus. That, and nothing less, is the missions mandate of the people of God.
