The Heart of the Matter • Keep your heart with all diligence Proverbs 4:23 for out of it spring the issues of life • Jesus reveals the true meaning of the law • Not just not killing Matt. 5:21-22 • Hatred against a brother v.22 • Insulting, wounding with words • Assassinating his character • (Re)building relationships a priorityv.23-25 • If not, religion is vain • Failure to reconcile brings consequences v.26-27

The Heart of the Matter • Not just not committing adultery Matt. 5:27-30 • Not just lust of the flesh • Fondling is against Christ’s law • Also lust of the eye (immodest apparel 1 Tim. 2:9-10, pornography Col. 3:5) • Emotional unfaithfulness first • Divorce v.31-32 • God hates divorce! Malachi 2:13-16 • It is violence against one’s lifelong mate • and children

The Heart of the Matter • Swearing vs. not swearing v.33-37 • Perform oaths to God under the law in contrast to false gods • Not to take His name in vain Psalm 15:4 • Must pay vow, keep any oath Ecclesiastes 5:1-6 • Scribes’ loopholes Matt. 23:16-22 • Not a simple “not…but” statement • We have no power to swear by anything v.34-36 • Just speak honestly! v.37 • Can acknowledge God will judge Rom. 9:1
