Dispensational Truth- God's Plan of the Ages
THE DISPENSATION OF LAW and the Mosaic and Palestinian Covenants • TEXT: Exodus 19:3-8 • In the dispensation of law we learn three things about God’s rules:
I. Test • A. To obey God’s voice and keep His covenant (this is called the Mosaic covenant and has three divisions) • 1. the (10) commandments, expressing the righteous will of God (Ex 20:1-26) • 2. the judgments, governing the social life of Israel (Ex 21:1-24:11) • 3. the ordinances, governing the religious life of Israel (Ex 24:12-31:18) • B. Response was “All that the Lord hath spoken, we will do!” (Ex 19:8 cf Ex 24:3,7)
II. Result • A. Disobedience (Ex 32:4,8; 2 Kings 17:7-20;) • B. This disobedience is continuous (Gal 3:10) • C. Judgment follows disobedience to God’s law, because this was the agreement (Deut 28:36-37, 49-69)
III. God’s Provision • A. A renewed covenant (Ex 34:10) containing limited provisions (Not as extensive as the Mosaic covenant) with the provision “Be sure to observe what I am commanding you this day” (34:11) • 1. No covenant with heathen (34:12-17) to prevent idol worship • 2. Keep the Feast of unleavened bread (34:18) • 3. Firstfruits belong to the Lord (34:19) • 4. Keep the sabbath (34:21)
5. Keep three additional Feasts (34:22) • 6. Males to worship three times a year “before the Lord” (34:23) (includes promise of peace) • 7. No leaven with blood sacrifices (34:25) • 8. No leftover Passover sacrifice (34:25) • 9. First of the firstfruits to be brought to the Lord’s house (34:26) • 10. “Thou shalt not boil a kid in his mother’s milk” (34:27)
B. “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel” (34:27). • C. Romans 8:3 • D. What was the purpose of the Law? • 1. Rom 3:20-28 • 2. Rom 7:7 • 3. Gal 2:16-21 • 4. Gal 3:24 • 5. Gal 3:10-11
E. What was God’s additional gracious promise? • 1. The Palestinian Covenant (Deut 30:1-10) • a. A promise of future obedience (30:6 cf. Jer 31:33) • b. A promise of future inheritance of the land (30:5 • c. A promise of blessing in the land (30:9) • d. These promises are conditional, and yet promised by God’s grace (Jer 31:33; Rom 11:26-27) • e. Accomplished through Israel’s Saviour (Matt 1:21)
