INVESTIGATE THE TRUTH OF GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION And they asked --- “WHAT SHALL WE DO THAT WE MAY BE SAVED!”
WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD? • Not This: • Calling the name "Lord, Lord" (Mt. 7:21-23) • Praying the "Sinner's Prayer" (_?????_) • But This: • Believing (Rom. 10:14) • Hearing and heeding the calling of God (Acts 2:21, 39; cf. 2 Th. 2:13-14; 1 Pet. 1:22-23) • Obedience to the will of the Lord (Luke. 6:46; 1 John 2:3-6) • Repentance and baptism (Acts 2:21, 36-41) • Baptism (Acts 22:16) • Trusting and depending upon God throughout one's life (Acts 9:14)
ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD... • When he left Ur of the Chaldees (Heb. 11:8; Acts 7:2-4; Gen. 11:31) • When God promised him that his own child would be his heir (Gen. 15:6; Rom. 4:3; Gal. 3:6) • When God promised that Sarah would bear a son (Rom. 4:18-22; Gen. 17:15-21) • When he offered up Isaac (Jas. 2:21-23) ...AND IT WAS RECKONED UNTO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
BY “FAITH” DOES NOT MEAN“FAITH ONLY” • “By faith Abel OFFERED unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain....” (Heb. 11:4) • “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death...for he hath had witness borne to him that before his translation he had been WELL-PLEASING unto God” (Heb. 11:5) • “By faith Noah, being warned of God concerning things not seen as yet, MOVED with godly fear, PREPARED an ark to the saving of his house....” (Heb. 11:7) • “By faith Abraham, when he was called, OBEYED to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he WENT OUT, not knowing whither he went. By faith he BECAME A SOJOURNER in the land of promise....” (Heb. 11:8-9)
REPENTANCE BEFORE FAITH? • “Repentance is always mentioned before faith in every passage where both are mentioned together (cf. Mt. 21:31-32; Mk. 1:14-15; Acts 20:21; Heb. 6:1)” • BUT --- THE Order of Mention Does NOT MEAN THE ORDER IN GOD’S PLAN. • How can the goodness of God lead a sinner to repent (Rom. 2:4), unless he first believes that God is good? • Godly sorrow leads to repentance (2 Cor. 7:10), but how can one have godly sorrow unless he first believes in God? • Jesus directed His apostles that repentance be preached among all nations (Lk. 24:46-47), but if a sinner cannot believe until after he has repented, why preach to him until then?
MAN IS SAVED BY... • Belief (Acts 16:31) • Repentance (2 Cor. 7:10) • Confession (Rom. 10:9-10) • Grace (Eph. 2:8-10; Tit. 2:11) • Mercy (Tit. 3:5) • The Longsuffering Of The Lord (2 Pet. 3:15) • Jesus (Mt. 1:21)
MAN IS SAVED BY... • Jesus' Blood (Rom. 5:9) • Jesus' Life (Rom. 5:10) • The Gospel (Rom. 1:16-17; 1 Cor. 15:1-2) • Hope (Rom. 8:24) • Calling On The Name Of The Lord (Rom. 10:13) • Obedience (Heb. 5:8-9) • Works (Jas. 2:24) • Baptism (1 Pet. 3:21; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Mk. 16:15-16)
