Camp Rooms • DiscoverE has four computer labs for running computer camps this summer: • ETLC E2-005 • ETLC E2-006 • ETLC E5-001 • ETLC E5-005
Camp Rooms: ETLC E2-005 Second floor, right next to the COLT Design Lab Used exclusively for Virtual Discoveries, which runs all 8 weeks of camp Has a built-in podium computer and podium projector. Does not allow for audio input. DiscoverE uses the left side of the lab, facing the whiteboard.
Camp Rooms: ETLC E2-006 Right next to the ATCO Design Lab Used for 3D Games, 3D Animation, and Flash Has a built-in podium computer and projector with video and audio DiscoverE uses the right side of the room, facing the whiteboard.
Camp Rooms: ETLC E5-001 & E5-005 5th floor of ETLC The doors are to remain closed; instructors will need swipe access to get into the room. Campers will have to move in and out of the room quickly, because the door is on a timer and an alarm will go off if it is open for too long. DiscoverE’s own computers will be set up in these rooms, and then taken down at the end of the summer.
There is no podium for these rooms, so instructors will need to use a DiscoverE laptop and portable projector if necessary. There is a screen for the projector, however. Robotics Intermediate & Senior run in E5-005. Junior Tech and Delle Tech run in E5-001. Campers should use the stairs, not the elevators, when moving to and from the fifth floor.
Podium Access E2-005 and E2-006 have their own podiums. The podium consists of a screen, keyboard, and mouse attached to the computer in the small side room. To turn on this computer, just open the door for the side room and press the power button. It’s quite slow and takes a while to load up. The podium computer also has a touch screen used for controlling the screen, lights, and audio. There is also a camera at the back of each room which can be viewed from the podium. An access code is no longer needed to use the podiums.
The podium computers are quite slow and cannot run most of the programs used in computer camps. Usually, instructors will need a DiscoverE laptop to run these camps. The laptop can be connected to the podium using the VGA input port on the top. There is also an RCA audio input if needed. The new laptop (Grechin) has only HDMI output. This laptop will be used mostly for 3D Animation and 3D Game Design. An HDMI to VGA video converter box will be necessary to use this laptop for camps.
H: Drive The H: Drive is a network drive hosted by the Faculty for use by DiscoverE. The H: Drive can be accessed from any of the computer camp rooms, but cannot be accessed from the office or anywhere else. A DiscoverE login is needed to access the H: Drive. For instructors, the username is discover. The password is instructor2010. To find the drive, click Start and then Computer. (Win7)
The H: Drive is used mainly to store software for computer camps, and large files which won’t fit on the wiki. Camp and project write-ups should go on the wiki rather than the H: Drive. The H: Drive is organized by year, then by camp. Past years used instructor names for organization, but this is confusing for future staff, so stick to the camp name convention. The H: Drive is also where computer camp projects made by campers are stored.
The H: Drive has only 100 GB of space. This space is shared by campers and instructors. We run out of space on the H: Drive every year. We are trying to get more space for the H: Drive, but to ensure we have enough space, instructors must avoid storing unnecessary files on the drive, and delete or archive any files which are no longer needed. Campers are unable to save anything if the H: Drive is full, so if this happens, instructors should delete files which aren’t important anymore.
Camper Logins Campers will need a special login to access the computer camp software and storage. Instructors will receive a set range of Discover Numbers, then assign one number to each camper. As an example, the first week of Virtual Discoveries will get the range 1-20, so each camper’s Discover Number will be a number between 1 and 20. This remains their number for the entire summer; campers do not share logins or numbers. To find out a specific camp’s number range during a given week, look for the “Camper logins” page on the wiki. These numbers will be determined before camps start.
If the camper’s Discover Number is 17, their username for the computers is discover17. Their password is the same as their username. Campers login the same way instructors access the main discover account. They also have access to the H: drive, but they can see only their own files and not anybody else’s. They will use the same login for the entire camp week. If they return in future weeks, they can use the same login as their first week. These logins have internet access, so campers do not need to authenticate with CCIDs to access the internet.
Instructors can access all of the camper folders from the main instructor account. The camper folders are mapped to the internet, so campers can download any files they save to the H: Drive from home. They can find their files by going to http://engglab.ualberta.ca/and finding their Discover Number. Files can be saved by right-clicking and choosing “Save As…”
