  3. Garfield Middle School of Science and Technology Students will be offered the opportunity to explore electives in the disciplines of science and technology. Using emerging technologies, students will survey courses in the study of distance learning, engineering, robotics and computer aided design to build foundational skills for future high school level courses.

Garfield Middle School of Science and Technology • Students attending this school will demonstrate mastery of skills through science fairs,competitions, technology applications, experimentation and other performance-based activities. • Experiential education may include visits to: • Museum of Science • NE Aquarium • Massachusetts Institute of Technology • Biogen/Idec

  5. Garfield Middle School of Science and Technology • Students will have the opportunity to read about famous scientists, trailblazers in technology, as well as science fiction authors. In class and summer reading may include: • Harry Potter Series • The Chronicles of Narnia • The Music of the Dolphins • Smart Dog • The Last Lobo

  7. Rumney Marsh Academy Students attending this school will delve deeper into classical studies, including the study of foreign language. Course options will include the study of history, writing, journalism, as well as advanced topics in math and science. Elective courses may include the study of Latin, Spanish, Debate, Journalism, Global Studies, Mythology, Poetry, Language and Linguistics.

Rumney Marsh Academyat Beachmont School until new building construction completion (anticipated date- 2007) • Students attending this school will demonstrate mastery of skills through debate, public speaking, journal and newspaper articles, television productions, exhibitions and other performance-based activities. • Experiential education may include visits to: • Massachusetts State House • Boston Globe • JFK Library • Channel 2/ PBS

In class and summer reading may include: • The Life of Julius Caesar • Robinson Crusoe • Treasure Island • Benjamin Franklin • Island of the Blue Dolphins

Potential courses include Creative Expression through Dance, American Folk Dance, Vocal and Instrumental Classes, Theater, Puppetry, Drawing, Painting and Cultural Crafts. Students will

  14. The Middle School Academic Core Curriculum Each school will offer the same academic core curriculum of Mathematics, English, Science,and Social Studies. This curriculum will form the common foundation of knowledge for all students.

Choosing the Theme-driven School • Students in grade five and six will create an “Application Portfolio” during school time consisting of six components: • Table of Contents • Personal Statement (completed in March) • Project 1 (by end of January) • Student Reflection of Project 1 • Project 2 (by end of February) • Student Reflection of Project 2

  16. Choosing the Theme-Driven School The Portfolio will be part of the application process to the theme-driven school of their choice. Students will be placed in the program of their choice, as long as there are available seats. If conflicts arise, the portfolio will become a critical, deciding factor for admission.

Sample Middle School Student Schedule • Period 1: English Language Arts/Reading • Period 2:Mathematics • Period 3: Social Studies/History • Period 4: Science • Period 5: Targeted Instruction Period (TIP)for students who need additional targeted instruction in ELA, Math, ELL, SPED or enrichment • Period 6: Themed Elective Classes • Period 7: Encore classes (Physical Education, Guidance, Health, etc.)
