  1. Ferrahian High School Social Studies grade 7 Course Guidelines 2013-2014 Mrs. M. Vassilian vassilianm@gmail.com Welcome to our social studies class! I hope this will be an exciting learning experience for every student. The following is our class syllabus explaining the course, grading policy, and expectations.

  2. This year in Social Studies we will be studying; World History and geography; Medieval and Modern Times. In grade seven we will study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, Asia and North and South America in the years A.D. 500-1789 B.C, etc. During each unit we will be building skills in the following areas: history, geography, citizenship, study and research skills, thinking skills, reading and writing skills. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7th Grade World History will include the following units: Review of Maps and Globes/The Five Themes of Geography Ancient Rome Ancient Arabia Ancient America/Empires and Cultures of Americas Cultures in Medieval Europe/Renaissance European Expansion Course description

  3. ASSESSMENT METHOD The following will be utilized for assessing, evaluating, and recording students’ progress and achievement. Tests/Quizzes Map tests Vocabulary tests Projects Current events reports Grade percentage Assessments (Tests, Quizzes, etc.) 65%Classwork /Homework: 15% (informal assessment) Participation10% Projects: 10%

  4. Daily Agenda As student enter the classroom each day, they are required to read the daily agenda written on the board. Write the HW down in their daily planner. On most days they will have a short daily activity to complete in class. Materials: Students required materials Two blue or black pens or pencils A two pocket folder only to be used for social study papers A notebook Colored pencils Box of tissues Scissors Glue

  5. Classroom Rules Student are required to follow ALL Classroom Rules and School-wide Rules as described in the Ferrahian High School’s General Handbook. 1- Respect self, others and property. 2- Be on time, prepared with necessary materials and ready to learn. 3- No food (including gum) or drinks are allowed in the classroom. Consequences for Breaking Rules 1st Consequence: Corrective warning 2nd Consequence: A call to parents* 3rd Consequence: Referral to vice principal and detention with assignment *Parents will be called only once in a quarter. If the student misbehaves again after the parents have been called, the student will receive a referral after the corrective warning.

  6. Make Up Work: Students who are absent are required to make up all work the next days. If a student is absent for an extended amount of time, an appropriate makeup date for all outstanding assignments will be arranged. It is the responsibility of the student to see me to make up tests. Homework: Homework is due at the start of class. Students are expected to have their work done on time. Work will be considered late after this time. Special circumstances must be discussed prior the due date. Assignments missed during an excused absence will follow the policy in the student handbook. The student is responsible for finding out what they missed and scheduling time for extra help or making up work.

  7. Using the Web: Occasionally, we will be completing projects/activities that will require the Internet as a resource for information. Parents permission is needed for student to bring laptops to complete in class projects.
