  1. CROSS WORDS September 9, 2012

  2. Let’s take a moment and look back… • The crucifixion began at approximately 9:00 a.m. [Mark 15:25] • About three hours later, an intense darkness fell over the “whole land” and it lasted for approximately three hours. [Luke 23:44]

  3. Last week we heard Him say… • “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) [In the imperfect tense, meaning he said this a number of times.] I think this would have been his first words from the cross. • “Woman, behold, your son!” “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:26-27) Likely this was stated soon after he was nailed to the cross. Stated in the context of the soldiers dividing up the “spoils” of their work.

  4. “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43) [To one of the thieves crucified with Him. But only after some time had elapsed, since at first they both were insulting Him. (Mark 15:32)] Then.....He goes silent for more than three hours. • After that, at about noon, (so the first three statements would have occurred BEFORE noon) the sky is darkened for approximately three hours.

  5. Then He speaks the final four statements in rapid order. • Last week we heard Him say, “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46 • So, the last four statements happen in just a few minutes.

  6. The last three saying: • Occurred in rapid cession • Appear to reflect both clarity of mind and strength of body • Trigger a series of extremely strange and upsetting events • Hold some keys as to what really happened that day

  7. But first… John 10:17-18 “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one takes it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

  8. “I thirst” • John 19:28 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.” • This is a quotation of Psalms 69:21 • His mind is still clear [in spite of the pain of the cross] and He is thinking of all the remaining prophecies to be fulfilled. • They [whoever “they” is] took hyssop, placed a sponge filled with sour wine on it, and put it to his lips to drink. • The word hyssop is very similar to the Greek word for “spear” making some think that what was really used was a spear for this purpose. [Hyssop is very soft, much like heavy blades of grass.] • However, perhaps this is symbolic of Exodus 12:22, where hyssop was used to cover the doorpost of the Israelites with blood to spare them from the Destroyer.

  9. “It is finished!” • John 19:30 “Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” • This is from a single Greek word, tetelestai, which is the shout given by a warrior in battle which the enemy retreats or a champion in the games when claiming victory.

  10. “Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit” • Luke 23:46 “And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, beating their breasts. 49 And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things. • Another quote from the Psalms {31:5}.

  11. His death • Notice that His mind is still crystal clear. He remembers the Psalms, while reflecting on His mission. • His body remains strong enough for Him to cry out with a loud voice. (Twice! Matthew 27:50 “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice.”) • He “bowed His head” John 19:30. This is the Greek term for laying a newborn down into a crib. • Note: He “gave up” His spirit. (John 19:30). • I propose that He chose the exact moment of His death—that He literally meant it when He said, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on My own initiative.” • But: Acts 2:23 “This Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.”

  12. Eerie, eerie events • Matthew 27:51 “And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” • These curtains were to be thirty cubits tall—about 45 feet high. The only way to tear them apart from top to bottom? • “The veil shall serve for you as a partition between the holy place and the holy of holies” [Exodus 26:33] What is the significance of this?

  13. Ready for this? • Matthew 27:51-53 “and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.” • WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT?????

  14. The reaction of those who witnessed this • Matthew 27:54 “Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” • More specifically, “When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” He then proclaims His innocence. (Luke 23:47)
