Demographics of the subjects Introduction Clients with depressive disorder suffered from the declination in life satisfaction. The inclusion of occupational therapy in the treatment team of depression ensures that the occupational needs of the clients can be met. The purpose of the study is to examine the occupation-based predictors contributing to the life satisfaction for clients with depression in outpatient clinic in Taiwan. Method This is a cross-sectional study collecting demographic, illness, functional, and environmental variables via Tablet PC. Subjects were recruited from a outpatient psychiatric clinic of a medical center in northern Taiwan. The current study employed the Model of Human Occupation as a theoretical basis, and applied related assessment in the study. Assessments: 1. Occupational Self Assessment-self (OSA-self) and Occupational Self Assessment-environment (OSA-E) is a MOHO based self report assessment to evaluate clients’ perceived competence and resources. 2. Social Support and mastery are self report questionnaires used to evaluate the satisfaction with social support and degree of control of the subjects. 3. Taiwan interests checklist was used to assess the level of interests. 4. Life satisfaction index (0-100); Level of satisfaction with life pattern (1-5, 1 very satisfied); level of independence (1-4, 1 independent); perceived sleep quality (1-5, 1 poor quality); and perceived level of depression (1-5, 1 no depression). Result Seventy-five subjects with depressive disorder were recruited for the study (Table 1).The results of the study showed that significant correlation with life satisfaction were found in variables of perceived level of independence, level of satisfaction with life pattern, number of interested activity, OSA-S, OSA-E, sense of mastery, social support, perceived sleep quality and perceived level of depression. The Spearman's rho ranged from -.248 to .677 (Table 2). All demographic variables were not related to life satisfaction using one way ANOVA analysis. The prediction model was tested using SPSS stepwise analysis. The predicting factors include perceived sleep quality, OSA-S, level of satisfaction with life pattern, level of independence, sense of mastery, social support, and number of interested activities. The results showed that three variables explained 57.5% variance in life satisfaction. They were level of satisfaction with life pattern, OSA-S, and social support explaining variance of 45.4%, 10.2%, and 4.7% perspectively. Table 2. Correlations Discussion The results of the study offered several directions for occupational therapists working with depression. In order to enhance life satisfaction of the clients, occupation-based variables need to be addressed in the treatment including increasing occupational competence, environment resource, sense of mastery, satisfaction with social support etc. The occupational competence of the subjects needs to be viewed from volition, habituation and performance perspectives. The most important factors in the model to predict life satisfaction is the perceived level of satisfaction with one’s life pattern which is consistent with previous finding. The result raised an important issue for us that life pattern rehabilitation for clients with depression is an area needing scientific research as well as clinical attention. As an occupational therapist, we need to develop programs to address this issue, and furthermore validate the effectiveness of the program in future research. **.
