ATB: MAKE A LOGBOOK ENTRY TITLED “ENZYME ACTIVITY” • WRITE FOLLOWING 5 QUESTIONS IN YOUR LOGBOOK—LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR YOUR ANSWERS! 1. List 4 properties of enzymes • What is the difference in a reaction with or without an enzyme? • Why can an enzyme help only one reaction? • How can an enzyme be used repeatedly in a reaction? • What happens to an enzyme when it is heated or placed in acid?
Computer enzyme activity • Go to the “Pickup work here” folder on the desktop and click on the .html document linking you to the enzyme activity. • Follow the interactive animations to answer the questions on your paper Enzymes-Enzyme activity
4 Properties of Enzymes • Enzymes speed up the rate of chemical reactions • Enzymes are NOT used up in the chemical reaction • Only small amounts are needed since they are recycled and reused
Enzymes are specific to one type of chemical reaction • The ACTIVE SITE of the enzyme “fits” only the chemical(s) that the enzyme works on (substrate). 4) Enzymes are denatured (stop working because of shape change) when they are heated or placed in acid. ATB: MAKE A LOGBOOK ENTRY TITLED “PROTEINS AND AMINO ACIDS” • PUT LAB REPORT ON THE FRONT COUNTER • AGENDA: NO HW
2 Types of Proteins 1) Structural – proteins that form physical parts. Examples – -keratin (hair and nails) -actin (muscle) -microtubules (cell membrane skeletons). Gelatin - Gelatin (Chime) Collagen – Collagen
2) Functional – Proteins that have activity Examples- -Hormones – used for signaling -Defensive – antibodies that recognize foreign invaders -Transport – Carrier proteins!!! -Enzymes – used for chemical reactions Antibody- antibody structure Hemoglobin - hemoglobin
Protein Shape Determines Function Example – Fibrous proteins are long and thin, and are used for structure
