Davistown/Southend Park Neighborhood • Southend Park area has lost 63% of dwelling units since 1934 • Landlords reluctant to improve properties because of pending roadway • Neighborhood has borne an unfair burden from proposed NPE for decades • Mitigation area for Urban Village Plan (Redevelopment Area)

Residential Impacts • All residential relocations occur in most economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Lexington • Most impacted residents are renters (median rent=$288/ month) • 3/4 of residents are low income • Indirect impacts of community disruption and induced growth effects on land value • High-end residential development already occurring near community

  24. RAP’s influence on the Project Team • Increased respect for residents and energized team. • Learned that people didn’t really understand our decisions, especially the CLT. • Questioned effectiveness of our Public Involvement

  25. Why we needed an anthropologist • To develop a deeper understanding of the residents needs and desires. • To hear from residents who normally don’t speak out. • To inform future decisions on neighborhood design and construction.

  28. Newtown Pike Extension Schedule • Temporary Housing infrastructure underway • 16 Mobile Homes on order – Move in August, 2008 • First leg of roadway (Main Street to Versailles Road) to constructed by World Equestrian Games in fall 2010. • All Phases complete by ~ 2014
